Description

The policy brief published by KT4D suggests that examining culture allows for a deeper understanding of societal responses to AI development. Rather than applying only the current proposed risk assessment framework which greatly underestimates the cultural and societal impacts of AI technologies, KT4D argues that the appearance of culture within the regulatory frameworks must be refined, clarified and strengthened, a process to which the mechanisms outlined in the policy brief could contribute. Indeed a culture-centric approach highlights the diverse and complex ways in which communities navigate technological advancements. This approach acknowledges that new media are embedded within ongoing processes of meaning negotiation. As technology continues to evolve rapidly, democratic processes and civic engagement face mounting challenges. It is imperative for policymakers to protect the cultural dimension from potential AI harms, fostering a harmonious relationship between technological advancements and democratic principles. The authors argue that by prioritising cultural preservation alongside technological regulation, policymakers can develop more effective and equitable policies. This not only aligns with ethical considerations but also harnesses the invaluable insights offered by cultural responses to AI development.
