Manufacturing guiding tool for circular and programmed biodegradable materials under open environment conditions

MAGICBIOMAT plans to leverage trustworthy AI to develop programmed biodegradable materials and products with enhanced circularity and proven biodegradability in open environments.

Biodegradable plastics are designed to break down in controlled waste management conditions. However, when discarded or lost to the environment, they often fail to decompose completely, contributing to littering and plastic pollution. To fully address the issue of plastic pollution, we need innovative solutions. MAGICBIOMAT will utilise AI software to design and develop bio-based materials that are programmed to biodegrade in real aquatic and terrestrial environments.

The project focuses on two applications that significantly contribute to littering:

· agricultural mulching films and

· paper-based packaging.

The rate and extent of biodegradability of the developed products will be tested in soil, marine and freshwater environments across four different European climate zones. These tests will provide valuable data to calibrate the AI software and optimise the manufacturing of truly biodegradable products. Additionally, MAGICBIOMAT will provide recommendations for the labelling of biodegradable plastics and assess user acceptance through stakeholder engagement and behaviour change strategies.
