Description

This dataset contains data from broiler, dairy and beef farms enrolled in the EU H2020 project INTAQT from a total of nine European countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, The United Kingdom. The farms were selected to represent a wide range of farming systems, including conventional, organic and labelled (e.g. Protected Designation of Origin, European Chicken Commitment, Label Rouge) systems. The farm sample includes both representative conventional systems and niche systems.

Raw data were collected through farmer interviews conducted in 2022-2024 using a common questionnaire. Data were compiled and curated at FiBL, in Switzerland.

The dataset inludes 4 Excel sheets:

  • "Systems_description" - description of the selected farming systems;
  • "Broilers_data" - data from 79 broiler farms (e.g., outdoor access, genotypes, slaughter weight, slaughter age, number of production cycles per year);
  • "Dairy_data" -data from 77 dairy farms (e.g., herd size, milk yield, replacement rate, farm size, age at first calving);
  • "Beef_data" - data from 53 beef farms (e.g.,   variables describing the farms (e.g., herd size, milk yield, slaughter weight, slaughter age, farm size);
  • "Productivity_&_Efficiency" - calculated variables related to productivity, feed efficiency (protein feed conversion ratio either considering all feeds or only human-edible feeds), and land use (land required to produce the feeds needed per year considering all land or only arable land).

An accompanying Excel README sheet provides the variable dictionnary.

This dataset was used to describe the farms, classify them according to their level of inputs related to livestock intensification, and study feed-food competition.
