European Acoustics Association

The European Acoustics Association (EAA) is a non-profit entity established in 1992 that includes in its membership societies predominantly in European countries interested in to promote development and progress of acoustics in its different aspects, its technologies and applications. EAA gathers 33 societies of acoustics and serves more than 9000 individual members all over Europe. The European Acoustics Association (EAA) is an Affiliate Member of the International Commission for Acoustics (ICA) and of Initiative of Science in Europe (ISE).

Benchmark Cases and Datasets in Acoustics

Solutions to partial differential equations (PDEs) that describe acoustic problems can be found by analytical, numerical and experimental techniques. Within arbitrary domains and for arbitrary initial and boundary conditions, all solution techniques require certain assumptions and simplifications. Due to the lack of a common process to quantify and report the performance of the solution technique, a variety of ways exists to discuss the results with the scientific community. Moreover, the absence of benchmark cases and reference results does hamper the validation of newly developed techniques.

Over the years many researchers in the field of computational acoustics have therefore expressed the need and wish to have available common benchmark cases. This platform of benchmark cases for computational acoustics community aims to deploy benchmarks in the entire field of computational acoustics. The platform is initiated and managed by the Technical Committee (TC) of Computational Acoustics of the European Acoustics Association (EAA).

At this website you will find databases, where (results of) benchmark cases can be submitted and are openly available. We kindly invite you to explore the results of the benchmark cases and encourage you to submit contributions.
You can make your benchmark case solutions citable by creating a DOI of your solutions.

In this section, upcoming events concerning the benchmarks will be published and promoted.

List of Benchmark Cases and Datasets

Benchmark cases are of interest throughout the computational acoustics wide community, and are defined for all fields of physical acoustics. Thereby, we have the following categories under which the current benchmark cases are listed:

Linear Acoustics

Wave propagation as a solution of the wave equation, including scattering and radiation problems, interior and exterior problems, time domain and frequency domain problems.

High-frequency acoustics

Higher frequency problems for which consideration of energy terms might be more interesting than deterministic evaluation acoustic quantities such as pressure or particle velocity.

Acoustics and vibration

Fluid-structure interaction problems, including transmission loss through (layered) plates and shells, structure, and porous media.

Acoustics involving heterogeneous and moving fluids

Flow- and aeroacoustics (with coupling to structural vibrations), underwater acoustics.
