The possibility of providing connected, cooperative and autonomous mobility (CCAM) services along different countries when vehicles traverse various national borders has a huge innovative business potential. However, the seamless provision of connectivity and the uninterrupted delivery of services along borders also poses interesting technical challenges. The situation is particularly innovative given the multi-country, multi-operator, multi-telco-vendor, and multi-car-manufacturer scenario of any cross-border layout. Motivated by this, 5GCroCo brings together a strong consortium from both the European automotive and the mobile communications industries, with the direct involvement of road traffic authorities and the support from national governments, to develop innovation at the intersection of these two industrial sectors. The aim is to define a successful path towards the provision of CCAM services along cross-border scenarios and reduce the uncertainties of a real 5G cross-border deployment.

5GCroCo aims at trialling 5G technologies in the Metz-Merzig-Luxembourg cross-border corridor, traversing the borders between France, Germany and Luxembourg. The objective is to validate advanced 5G features, such as New Radio, Mobile Edge Computing, distributed computing, Software Defined Networking, Network Slicing, and improved positioning systems, all combined together, to guarantee that innovative use cases for CCAM can be enabled. 5GCroCo aims at defining new business models that can be built on top of this unprecedented connectivity and service provisioning capacity, also ensuring that relevant standardization bodies from the two involved industries are impacted.

5GCroCo validation will focus on three use cases: 1) tele-operated driving, 2) generation and distribution of high-definition maps for autonomous vehicles, and 3) anticipated cooperative collision avoidance, but will also provide general recommendations for any other CCAM use cases.

The consortium is comprised of leading telco vendors (Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia), mobile network operators (MNOs) of the three involved countries (Orange, Deutsche Telekom, and POST Luxembourg), automotive OEMs (Renault SA, Peugeot, Volkswagen AG, and Volvo), first tier suppliers for the automotive industry (Bosch), road traffic authorities (SANEF and HTW as beneficiary partners and BMVI through letter of support), SMEs (SEC-Consult, Worldsensing, Nextworks, Mobile World Capital), and a key representation of academic partners (CTTC, i2CAT, NKUA, Eurecom, Technical University of Munich, Fortiss). The project is coordinated by the CTTC.
