Database of adnominal possessive constructions in the Malayo-Polynesian languages of Southeast Asia - Version 3
Creators
Description
A database of adnominal possessive constructions in 100 Malayo-Polynesian languages of the Southeast Asian area (i.e., Austronesian languages from outside Taiwan and the Oceanic subgroup). Our sample is one of convenience, that is, it is significantly influenced by the availability of adequate grammatical descriptions. Nonetheless, the languages surveyed are indicative of the genetic and areal diversity across MPSEA. This database was used for the creation of maps of three features displaying crosslinguistic variation in adnominal possessive constructions: (i) word order of free (pro)nouns for possessor and possessum; (ii) locus and marking of the possessive relationship (e.g., no marker, bound marker, free marker, etc.); (iii) differential possessor marking (e.g., direct versus indirect possessors, alimentary versus general possession, etc.). Sources used for the coding are as listed in the database.
