Deliverable 3.5 - New Vaccines

Description

The aim of this Deliverable is to investigate and improve the current vaccines for European sea bass (BSS) and gilthead sea bream (SBG). This remit included collection and typing of the current pathogens in the field; to make sure any pathogenic strains of Noda virus, Photobacterium damsela subsp. piscicida and Vibrio anguillarum were included in the vaccine; to improve quality and efficacy of the new vaccines including optimisation of vaccine production methods; to produce new range of vaccines to protect fish for all stages of the lifecycle with improved protection and duration of immunity.

The aim of the vaccines produced in PerformFISH is to improve on the current efficacy and include novel vaccines to the portfolio of available products. Aquaxprs has prepared the only experimental triple VNN, Vibrio, & Pasteurella vaccine and the only VNN immersion vaccine technologies available and with the validation field trials scheduled in PerformFISH project, these will hopefully be commercialised by 2021. It is important to continually monitor the situation in the field and make improvements to the vaccines if required. It is also important to access our vaccines performance against the competition.

During the development of this task, it was evident that new developments in both strain characterisation & typing, diagnostic testing and vaccine components were available outside the consortium. In order to take advantage of these new developments, Aquaxprs financed certain areas of the vaccine development on its means. These complementary results are included in this Deliverable to draw a more complete picture of the endeavour to deliver improved vaccines for the MMFF sector.
