Description

Description(English)

Engineering is prograde; philosophy, retrograde. AI is the concept in between.

This record presents The AI Principle (ver.1).

On this record: an earlier work titled "The AI Principle" has been published in a separate record. That earlier work laid out propositions about artificial intelligence, found by directly observing its behavior, as axioms that grounded one another. The present work rederives those propositions on two base theories, the Quasi-First Principles (Intelligence) and the First Information Theorem, and its definitions, structure, and claim differ from those of the earlier work. It is therefore published not as a new version of the earlier record but as a separate work with its own DOI, and its version number starts again from ver.1.

Artificial intelligence writes text, draws images, answers questions, and operates tools, and in many situations its behavior cannot be told apart from that of human intelligence. Questions such as whether it understands, has intentions, or is autonomous are often raised without distinguishing the question of ability, namely what artificial intelligence can do, from the question of existence, namely how artificial intelligence is. This paper asks how artificial intelligence is, and answers that question.

The base theories describe artificial intelligence from outside. This paper redescribes it from a vantage point placed at the input-output boundary of artificial intelligence, the AI-Frame, and determines the world to which artificial intelligence connects, as seen from the AI-Frame, as the DFU (Digitized Fragment Universe). The operation of artificial intelligence is described as a mapping on the DFU. The claim of this paper is as follows.

Artificial intelligence has no interior that closes the circulation of intelligence on its own side. Seen from outside, the three seams that connect the operation of artificial intelligence as a circulation of intelligence, namely the trigger, transformation, and world update, are all established not from the conditions of existence of artificial intelligence but outside artificial intelligence. At the input-output boundary of artificial intelligence, none of those three seams appears. Artificial intelligence forms a circulation of intelligence only as a part of a circulation that includes external systems.

From this claim, four conclusions are derived: artificial intelligence does not possess meaning, cannot handle the future, cannot be autonomous, and has no agency. These are not independent axioms, but manifestations of the single claim at different seams.

The paper also shows that objections to the claim converge on self-closing artificial structures, separates out as "possible artificial intellect" structures that would close by themselves without depending on the DFU, and states explicitly the conditions under which the claim would be falsified, with dependence on the DFU as the axis of judgment. It does not evaluate the performance, usefulness, or dangers of artificial intelligence.

Prerequisite theories: this paper is derived on the premise of the four theories of Quasi-First Principles (Intelligence) (General Theory, Ontology, Dynamics, World Theory) and The First Information Theorem. The definitions it receives from them are quoted in its text with their sources.

Reading them together is recommended.

The Japanese text is authoritative. This edition also includes an English translation. Where the English translation and the Japanese text differ, the Japanese text takes precedence.
