The First Information Theorem — Derived from the Quasi-First Principles (A Theory of the Establishment of Exteriorization) /
Description
Description(English)
This record presents The First Information Theorem (ver.1).
The word information is used in every situation of daily life, yet the answer to the question of what information is differs in each field that asks it. The theory of communication treats information as a quantity that is transmitted, and semantic arguments treat it as content that ought to be true. Behind these lay an implicit premise: that it is human beings who produce, read, and use information. This premise is no longer self-evident. Observation mechanisms record the world without passing through human judgment, and artificial intelligence produces outputs in forms indistinguishable from what human beings have written.
This paper answers the question of what information is by the following theorem.
Information is established only when knowledge, crystallized in response to a world-difference in an intelligent entity that possesses intellect, is exteriorized and becomes a state that is discrete as a sign.
This theorem defines information neither as the bearer of truth, nor as a container of meaning, nor as a quantity that is transmitted. Information is defined by the route of its establishment.
From this theorem, the paper derives the following.
- Information is established not at the moment of observation but at the moment of exteriorization, and appears to an observing entity when it is observed anew by that entity's intellect
- Knowledge and information, and memory and records, are distinguished
- Truth and settlement are distinguished. Falsity can be discretely settled at the moment of pushback, but truth is never discretely settled. This asymmetry is derived from observational asymmetry
- The action of information can be determined as a fact, but its effect on a receiver cannot be determined
- The records of observation mechanisms and the outputs of artificial intelligence are not information but fragments awaiting observation. The outputs of artificial intelligence are constructs, and are promoted to information only when a receiver exteriorizes them through judgment by its own ingenuity
The paper also describes the digital world and its electronic part, the relation of each form of intelligence to information, and patterns of information circulation in present civilization, and states explicitly the conditions under which it would be falsified.
This paper does not declare itself true. What it can state extends only to the fact that, on the premise of the Quasi-First Principles, it has not been pushed back. Nor does it evaluate the goodness or badness of the use of information or of ways of engaging with artificial intelligence.
Prerequisite theory: this paper is derived on the premise of the four theories of Quasi-First Principles (Intelligence): General Theory, Ontology, Dynamics, and World Theory. The definitions of the four theories that this paper uses are quoted in its text with their sources.
Subsequent theory: The AI Principle describes artificial intelligence on the basis of the Quasi-First Principles and this theorem.
Reading them together is recommended.
The Japanese text is authoritative. This edition also includes an English translation. Where the English translation and the Japanese text differ, the Japanese text takes precedence.
