Description

Public trust in science is crucial for promoting scientific progress, strengthening democratic institutions, and enabling informed decision-making. However, this trust is increasingly being challenged in today’s society and within a changing research environment. While overall trust in science remains high across the EU and globally, challenges persist in translating this trust into public adherence to science-based policies.

The VERITY Protocol of Recommendations for Fostering Trust in Science is a comprehensive, structured and actionable framework of 100 recommendations aimed at enhancing societal trust in science, research and innovation. This framework is grounded in the dynamic Ecosystem of Trust in Science, where trust is formed, shaped, negotiated, and influenced by various actors as Stewards of Trust. The VERITY Recommendations serve as a practical guide for Stewards of Trust, defined as organisations, groups, or individuals with expertise and commitment to strengthening trust in science. Their role may stem from an official mandate and mission or from their de facto power and influence. Through these capacities, they contribute to fostering societal trust in science and collaboration among key stakeholders within the Ecosystem of Trust. The VERITY Recommendations draw on scientific research, co-creation and validation processes with more than 500 stakeholders, ensuring that the recommendations are both evidence-based and responsive to real-world challenges.

VERITY identified six overarching strategies for fostering trust in science, including Building Trustworthy Science, Engaging the Public in Scientific Processes, Educating and Raising Awareness, Science Communication, Building Supportive Policy Frameworks, and Collaboration.

The VERITY Protocol of Recommendations is a critical resource for operationalising trust-building mechanisms across the ecosystem of trust in science. It provides a robust framework for Stewards of Trust to cultivate trust in science, emphasising actionable strategies, systemic reforms, and collaboration opportunities. It directly supports the objectives of Horizon Europe by promoting societal engagement, fostering ethical governance, and enhancing the accessibility of scientific advancements while supporting competitiveness in research and innovation. The document begins with the conceptual foundations of trust in science, followed by a detailed presentation of the recommendations across six overarching strategies for fostering trust in science.
