Executive summary

This report synthesizes the knowledge coproduction activities undertaken in the nextGEMS project, which aimed to bridge cutting-edge climate modeling with the practical needs of stakeholders across science, policy, and society. Through a series of structured hackathons and participatory processes, nextGEMS fostered collaboration between model developers, domain experts, and external users to iteratively improve storm- and eddy-resolving Earth system models (SR-ESMs).

Spanning six major hackathons and targeted stakeholder events, the participants contributed to diagnostics co-design, stakeholder-informed evaluation tools, and real-world applications in sectors such as renewable energy and fisheries. The events not only advanced model development but also built a community of practice, enhanced stakeholder capacity, and produced co-created outputs such as science explainers, storylines, and policy briefs.

Survey data and social network analyses confirm the strong collaborative dynamics and tangible impacts of the coproduction process—both in technical refinement and stakeholder learning. Despite challenges related to inclusivity, continuity, and long-term impact measurement, nextGEMS demonstrates a replicable model for inclusive, impactful Earth system science.
