Description

Observation site and equipment

An observational study of urban wind profile (vertical distribution of horizontal wind speed) was conducted in Tokyo, Japan, using a Doppler lidar system (DLS; Leosphere WINDCUBE WLS8). The DLS was installed on a rooftop at the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo, located in Meguro-ku (latitude: 35°40′N, longitude: 139°41′E, altitude: 40 m).

The surrounding area consists mainly of residential buildings. There are also two large commercial districts, Shibuya (2 km east-southeast) and Shinjuku (3 km north-northeast), which contain high-density skyscrapers. Additionally, an ample green space is situated to the northeast of the site. These varied surface conditions contribute to complex wind speed profiles depending on wind direction.

Measurement heights and period

Wind speed measurements were conducted at multiple heights using the DLS. The DLS measured wind velocities at 24 different levels, ranging from 67.5 m to 527.5 m above ground, with 20 m intervals. The observations were carried out over a total period of seven months, spanning from September to December 2013 and April to June 2014. The DLS recorded wind velocity as 10-minute average data.

Data usage

The file Vhm_raw.xlsx provides data on 10-minute averaged horizontal wind speed, while the file Dir_raw.xlsx contains information on the corresponding mean wind direction.
