PID Interoperability in Practice: Combining ARK, ISNI, ISSN and URN to enhance data quality and information services

  • 1. ISSN International Centre
  • 2. CONICET

Description

The ISSN International Centre is the registration authority for ISO 3297, which defines the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN). This persistent identifier is assigned to continuing resources, i.e. print and digital journals, websites, blogs and repositories. The metadata associated with this identifier is created by the ISSN network, which currently comprises 93 national centers and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025. The data is published on a portal based on a freemium model (https://portal.issn.org).

In its current strategy, the ISSN International Center has defined the interoperability of the ISSN with other persistent identifiers as a priority objective. Studies have been carried out to integrate ISNIs into the ISSN database and to implement a URN resolver. Working hypotheses and progress achieved will be presented by Gaëlle Béquet, Director of the ISSN International Center.

In addition, the ISSN Center for Argentina, hosted by CAICYT-CONICET, has set up in 2018 a persistent identification service combining ARK and ISSN. This service is free of charge (http://id.caicyt.gov.ar/index.php). Carlos Authier, researcher and director of the Argentine ISSN Center, will present it.
