EOSC-Life Access and User Management System for Life Science – the implementation and usage report

Description

This deliverable summarises the work done in implementing an access and user management system for the European life science research infrastructures during the EOSC-Life project. The Life Science AAI (Authentication and Authorisation Infrastructure), branded for users as the Life Science Login, provides a way to coordinate how user identity and access is managed in research services and data in the (community-specific) federated Infrastructure. The service has been managed by the life sciences community and operated by Masaryk University with the e-infrastructures, specifically GEANT and EGI, during the project. This model of operation continues after the project concludes.

The work package has followed the updated Life Science AAI blueprint (Deliverable D5.4) to implement the AAI service from technical, policy and legal perspectives. The Life Science AAI is fully implemented and in production since 11th of April 2022. To support the usage of the service the launch activity has been done in parallel with a merge of the AAI operated by ELIXIR, followed by the migration of BBMRI-ERIC AAI into the Life Science AAI. For the duration of the project, the WP has also been executing work to integrate other infrastructures by integrating (at least partially) and preparing the environment for a full-scale consolidation of the infrastructures into the Life Science AAI.

The service statistics, including active user accounts, number of services, number of logins, service availability, etc, will be described in Chapter 6 - Usage report.

This deliverable describes the technical architecture of the Life Science AAI and explains how implementation and delivery of the service were coordinated between EOCS-Life partners and the e-infrastructures. The deliverable includes current progress on policy work, which is crucial for the operations of the service. The current state of the service is described as well as processes developed as part of the operations, including processes for registration services or processes for helpdesk coordination between EOSC-Life partners and e-infrastructures. The deliverable also covers updates on the access management system ARIA, including the steps for integration with Life Science AAI.

To illustrate the intention and results of the project, key performance indicators are summarised in the table below. The success of establishing the Life Science AAI is demonstrated by three key usage indicators: the number of active accounts, number of Relying Parties utilising the AAI functionality and number of logins per month.

Date LS IDs registered Registered RPs (prod./test env.) Logins per month
04/2022 (Launch date) ~ 9000 ~ 150/160 ~ 6000
06/2023 (D5.5 submission) 14,213 165/189 13,123
