Recent Development of the COIN method in assimilating AMSR2 sea ice concentration in NorHAPS

  • 1. Norwegian Meteorological Institute

Description

Poster presented at the International Ice Charting Working Group (IICWG) data assimilation (DA) workshop at Oslo, Norway. This poster addresses the recent development of the Combined Optimal Interpolation and Nudging (COIN) method, which has been upgraded to a self-contained framework, the Local Analytical Optimal Nudging (LAON) method. The LAON method in this study has been applied in a high-resolution (3-5km) pan-Arctic coupled HYCOM-CICE model. The results show that the LAON assimilation produces accurate sea ice simulations, which have significantly lower integrated ice edge error (IIEE) and integrated marginal ice zone error (IME) when compared with the AMSR2 sea ice concentration that is assimilated, as well as the CMEMS sea ice analyses by NEMO, TOPAZ4 and neXtSIM for the European Arctic.
