Zotero for individuals and groups: A flexible workshop presentation on basic and advanced features

  • 1. KU Leuven

Description

An introduction to the reference manager Zotero, from basic setup to using advanced features like PDF management, advanced searching, optical character recognition of PDFs to make them searchable, and using Zotero groups to create a shared collection of references for a research team. This presentation is designed for use in workshops, but can also be used as a simple guide to Zotero. While it contains some information that is only relevant to KU Leuven researchers, it should be usable for anyone.

The presentation covers how to use Zotero to:

  • Gather references: Add citation information about, and copies of, scholarly sources
  • Process references: Organize, search, and annotate sources
  • Use references in writing: Add flexible citations and bibliographies in your favorite word processing tools
  • Share references: Collaborate on gathering and processing sources

It includes deep dives into a range of Zotero features, for example:

  • Saving references from online sources with the browser plugin
  • If you have a Zotero item with metadata: how to find/add a PDF?
  • If you have a PDF: how to turn this into a Zotero item with metadata?
  • OCR of PDFs in Zotero
  • Converting a plain text bibliography for import into Zotero
  • Search options in Zotero
  • Using the Word plugin
  • Tags and folders/collections
  • Zotero notes and PDF annotations

The presentation will be updated as Zotero's features change.
