Description

From August 24 to September 3, 2021, within the projects of the International Institute of Athos Heritage and the Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, there was an expedition to the Holy Mount Athos. In particular, this year's expedition explored the most remote places of the Athos settlement of Kapsala, where we still find many ancient cells and potholes in the mountain forests, in which hermit monks struggle.
Although the Kapsala monastic cells are located near the administrative center of Athos - Caries, they are still insufficiently studied. The least known about the residence in this desert part of Mount Athos, densely forested, Ukrainian monks in the XVIII-XIX centuries. The interest of the expedition to this place was due, among other things, to the fact that when our prominent countryman St. Paisiy Velychkovsky first came to Athos in 1746, then first went to this desert area, because there were many people from the Ukrainian lands. There were also cells of monks from Ukraine in the XIX century.
This article describes materials of expedition, new documets, which were found.
