Soil Survey of Scotland

The Soil Survey of Scotland (formerly part of the Macaulay Institute for Soil Research and now James Hutton Institute) produced a series of soil maps between 1947 and 1987. These maps have been digitised and form the basis of a number of derived biophysical resource maps and spatial datsets.

The Soil Survey of Scotland (formerly part of the Macaulay Institute for Soil Research and now James Hutton Institute) produced a series of paper soil maps at a range of scales between 1947 and 1987. These maps have subsequently been digitised and form the basis of a number of derived biophysical resource maps and spatial datasets.

Further information on the soil data is available on Scotland's soils website (https://soils.environment.gov.scot/) which includes links to the James Hutton Institute website (https://www.hutton.ac.uk/) where the datasets and associated metadata can be downloaded.

The curation and digitising of the datasets are funded by the Rural & Environment Science & Analytical Services Division of the Scottish Government.
