The policy below is currently under development, and is expected to evolve over time. Due to limited resources, datasets acceptance is prioritized by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). For inquiries, please email support+submissions@canceridc.dev.

NCI Imaging Data Commons (IDC) stakeholders, which include leads of the team, project managers and federal leads of the project, will determine which uploads are acceptable. Only uploads that are designated for ingestion into IDC will be accepted. In order to be considered for ingestion into IDC, the dataset must satisfy the following requirements, and be approved by the IDC stakeholders:

  • the dataset must have demonstrable scientific value, which may include but is not limited to the following:
    • collection of the dataset is supported by a competitively awarded research grant
    • the dataset is presented in a peer-reviewed publication
    • if the dataset contains analysis results derived from the images, performance of the approach used for generating those results must be established, and procedures for quality assurance of the resulting dataset must be documented
  • the dataset must be de-identified, with the de-identification procedures documented as required by the IDC stakeholders, reviewed and approved by the IDC stakeholders;
  • images and/or image-derived data must be represented using suitable objects in DICOM format, and must as much as possible be compliant with the standard;
  • the dataset must be accompanied by a standard permissive license, preferably CC-BY;
  • the dataset must be available publicly, without the need to sign any data transfer / data use agreements.
