The Device Research Laboratory (Laboratório de Pesquisa em Dispositivos) (LPD) was founded at 1972. The initial goal of the group was to research the demanded lasers for optical fiber communication on Brazil. 

Today,  LPD  is run in a collaborative effort with research focus on  nanophotonics,     optoelectronics,  optomechanics and quantum optics.
