In this project we propose a completely new approach for contrast enhancement in MRI. This approach relies on the fact that quadrupolar nuclei (i.e. atomic nuclei with spin quantum number > ½) can interact with proton spins. In analogy to paramagnetic agents an exchange of magnetization between the protons and the contrast agent can lead to an alteration of the proton magnetization as the quadrupolar nucleus acts as a relaxation sink.
