Aibel: Classification and Exchange of Industry Standarts using OWL Ontologies

Aibel is a leading service company within the oil, gas and offshore wind industries. The company provides its customers with optimal and innovative solutions within engineering, construction, modifications and maintenance throughout a plant’s entire life cycle. Aibel has used semantic technologies to support its business since 2013, and since 2015 the Material Master Data (MMD) ontology and system has been in use for all capital projects. The MMD ontology is based on OWL 2 and uses ISO 15926-14 as upper ontology. Today, MMD consists of 370 domain-specific ontologies, defining a total of 2000.000 classes. The Aibel use case represents a potential future extension of the MMD ontology.
