Description
Naladiyar is one of the Sangam Classics and it has three parts namely Aratthupal, Porutpal, and Kaamatthuppal and it exactly resembles Tirukkural which too has three parts. It was composed by saints of Jains and it has 400 poems of each four lines. Hence, the name Naladiya came into existence. Out of 400 poems on different topics, the researcher has an interest in studying and analyzing the water as portrayed by the Jains. There are still many insights left and it requires energy of wisdom and knowledge. Water is one of the five major elements and it goes without saying that all living beings including the plants and animals on earth need it; Though the world is surrounded by wide and deep oceans the same water cannot be used and we have to depend solely on rain water. The Water has more characteristics and the poets who adore nature did a lot of analysis on water. They studied its nature at length and made use of it as similes in their poems. At surface level, it appears to be ‘on water or about water, but a second look would imply that it is to denote the human character. Most often it is used to caution humankind reminding them about improving the quality of life. The dirty water is used to indicate the bad nature of a man and through that, it is instructed to live a more disciplined and healthier life. For research purposes, I have taken Naladiyar to analyze the effects, ability, and use of water along with implied sense expressed by the poets; and in some places, I have also made my contribution. It should be said that the poem is rich in its analysis of ‘water’. The researcher has taken poems from other sources to compare and contrast the statements with one another. It should be stated that whatever is said and done the element ‘water’ really stands as incomparable with anything but humankind ignores the effect of water upon them. To conclude, Water is very resourceful and it should be admitted that it is alive with enviable qualities. It is wise we adhere to discipline ourselves in maintaining its state.
