Description
* Asplenium cancellatum Alston (1956: 8) (Fig. 2–4).
Holotype: — CAMEROON. Sud-Ouest: Near Nyasoso, on road from Tombel, 24 November 1950, Thorold 13 (BM000785455 [digital image!]).
New record for Rwanda:— Western Province: Nyungwe NP, Huye – Rusizi km 100, epiphyte, 15 March 2022, E.Fischer s.n. (KOBL); Gisakura, canopy epiphyte in montane forest, elev. 1953 m, S2°26`29.21`` E29°07`02.60``, 3 April 2021 E.Fischer s.n. (KOBL); Nyungwe NP, road Pindura-Bweyeye km 21, canopy epiphyte, elev. 1743 m, S2°34’19.86’’ E29°12’14.64’’, 6 December 2021, E.Fischer s.n. (KOBL).
Habitat: —Canopy epiphyte in montane forest, elev. 1743–1953 m.
Distribution in Rwanda:—Western Province: Nyungwe NP, Gisakura.
General distribution: —Africa: Ghana, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gulf of Guinea Isl.
Note: —This taxon belongs to a group of closely related species. We have seen a large number of specimens of Asplenium cancellatum from various herbaria. Among these sheets there is a considerable variability and we are convinced that some undescribed species are hidden among them. Viane (2021) shows that specimens from Madagascar originally identified as A. cancellatum by Tardieu-Blot (1958: 192) belong to different species (A. itremoense Viane 2021: 131 and A. callmanderi Viane 2021: 59).
After investigation of the type specimen of A. cancellatum (BM) and especially the SEM-photograph of the spore attached to the specimen, we are convinced that our material belongs to A. cancellatum s.str. Spores from our collection match exactly the photo on the type specimen (Fig.3 E, F, Fig. 4).
