Description

In the present paper we aim to offer a perspective of comparative analysis on the influences that platonic and neoplatonic philosophy exerted on the theology of Dionysius the Pseudo-Areopagite. In this paper we will deal with his most known writing, On the Divine Names. Given the fact that this paper has a relatively limited length, we do not intend an exhaustive exposition, but rather an introduction to the assumption of Greek philosophy by dionysian theology through analyzing some of the most important motifs. The paper contains an introduction referring to the person of Dionysius, but also to the importance of philosophy, mainly Greek, for Christian theology. Further, we focus on some of the basic concepts that "On the Divine Names" use, and which are clearly influenced by Neoplatonism. Concepts such as "ὑπερούσιος" are analyzed at both Plato and Plotinus compared to Dionysius, with the rendering of translated fragments from the works where these concepts appear. The end is devoted to the proper conclusions
