Description

Organic spintronics originates from the idea that the strengths of spintronics and those of organic electronics can be combined to create a new class of devices. Spintronics encompasses all phenomena that depend on the manipulation of the
spin of the electron. Its birth can be traced back to the work of Albert Fert and Peter Gr€unberg for which they received the Nobel Prize in 2007. They discovered the phenomenon known as giant magnetoresistance (GMR), which is based on the dependence of transport on the orientation of the carriers’ spin in ferromagnetic/normal metal multilayers. This discovery revolutionized the electronics industry, for example, by allowing the fabrication of ever smaller hard disk read heads. Since then, spintronics grew to include a wide range of phenomena such as spin-transfer torque, tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), spin caloritronics, spin
Hall effect, and its inverse.
