Description

20. Epidendrum stictoglossum Hágsater & D.Trujillo, (2007: t. 992). (Figure 10D)

Type:— PERU. Ancash: Prov. Yungay, Huascarán National Park, Quebrada Yanapaccha, a lateral of Quebrada Ranincuray, 3700–3840 m, 19 April 1985, Smith 10479, (holotype: USM! isotypes: CPUN! HUT! MO!).

Distribution:— Peru, in the departments of Ancash and La Libertad. Restricted to the northwestern region of the Peruvian Andes, including records within the Huascarán National Park, in semi-humid environments at elevations above 3500 m.

Notes:— Epidendrum stictoglossum is recognized by the plants to 130 cm tall, the leaves linear, erect and parallel to stems, the flowers yellow tinged purple, the lip 3-lobed with purple-red dots, and the sepals 9–12 mm long. Epidendrum ypsilum is vegetatively similar, but the flowers are yellow with scarce red dots, the sepals 6.2–8 mm long, and the mid-lobe sub-triangular with the apex emarginate.

Conservation Status:— DD. Data deficient. As most orchids, listed in CITES appendix II.

Examined specimens:— PERU. La Libertad: Prov. Pataz, Chihualen, 3550 m, 28 January 1996, Villalobos 23, (MOL!).
