Navicula hochstetteri Grunow 1863

Creators

Description

47. Navicula hochstetteri Grunow (Figs 93, 94)

Type locality: Nicobar Islands (in the eastern sea of Bay of Bengal, India).

Reference: Hustedt 1961–1966, p. 663, fig. 1664.

Morphometrics: Valves 24–58 (27–57) μm long, 15–34 (13–32) μm wide, transapical striae of the central parts 11–14 (14–20) in 10 μm, of the terminal parts 18–20 in 10 μm, with puncta on a stria 14–19 (14–17) in 10 μm.

Remarks: Navicula hochstetteri is distributed along the coastal areas of warmer oceans, but is not common (Hustedt 1961–1966), and was rarely found in other regions except the type locality. This taxon was reported from Brazil (Kutner 1961), and from Lakes Entrance of Australia (Foged 1978), and is mentioned on the checklist of biota of Chinese Seas (Liu 2008) and the inventory of biodiversity of New Zealand (Harper et al. 2012).

It is a tropical taxon in warmer coasts, despite limited distribution. This taxon was rarely encountered as an epiphyte along the Seogwipo coast in Jeju Island, and represents a new record for South Korea.
