Description

Teulisna quadrisignata (Moore, 1878), comb. n.

(Figs 7, 8, 13)

Cossa quadrisignata Moore, 1878, Proceedings of the general meetings for scientific business of the Zoological Society of London, 1878: 21 (Type locality: [NE India, West Bengal, Darjeeling] “ Darjiling ”).

= Cossa brunnea Moore, 1878, Proceedings of the general meetings for scientific business of the Zoological Society of London, 1878: 22 (Type locality: [NE India, West Bengal, Darjeeling] “ Darjiling ”), syn. n.

Type material examined. Lectotype of Cossa quadrisignata (hereby designated) (Figs 7, 12): male, “Darj.[eeling]” / “ Cossa | quadrisignata. | (type) Moore” / “coll. Atkinson | Moore” / “ Ilema | quadrisignata | Moore | s.g. Hmpsn.” / “* 308.” / “762” / “Coll. | Staudinger” / pink label “Origin.”, DNA voucher No. MFNLEP1045, gen. prep. No.: MfN-367 (prepared by Volynkin) (MfN). Lectotype of Cossa brunnea (hereby designated) (Fig. 8): female with abdomen of Brunia antica glued on, “Darj.[eeling]” / “ Cossa | brunnea. ♀. | (type) Moore” / “coll. Atkinson | Moore” / “ Ilema | brunnea | Moore | s.g. Hmpsn.” / “276.” / “759” / “Coll. | Staudinger” / pink label “Origin.”, DNA voucher No. MFNLEP1042, gen. prep. No.: MfN- 364 (prepared by Volynkin) (MfN)

Notes. (1) The species has been described based on the unspecified number of males held in O. Staudinger collection (Moore 1878). In order to stabilise the nomenclature, the single syntype located in the MfN collection where the Staudinger is currently housed is hereby designated as lectotype. (2) Cossa brunnea has been described based on the unspecified number of females held in O. Staudinger collection (Moore 1878). Unfortunately, the only syntype located in MfN had a non-original abdomen belonging to a male of Brunia antica (Walker, 1854) glued on it. However, it has the external appearance typical of the T. pallida species-group and matches the lectotype male of T. quadrisignata originating from the same area well. For this reason, Cossa brunnea is hereby synonymised with T. quadrisignata and the aforementioned syntype is hereby designated as lectotype in order to stabilise the nomenclature. (3) Due to the lack of any additional material available, the female genitalia structure of the species remains unknown.

Diagnosis. The forewing length is 13.0 mm in the male lectotype and 13.5 mm in the female lectotype of Cossa brunnea. The detailed comparison with the most similar T. thomasi sp. n. is provided above in the diagnosis of the latter species.

Distribution. The species is currently known only from northern West Bengal (Northeast India).
