Stromal Response to Cancer

  • 1. Department of Medical BioSciences, Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen 6525GA, The Netherlands

Description

Tumor-stroma interactions can foster an immunosuppressive microenvironment. In melanoma, distinct immunosuppressive mechanisms can override high immunogenicity and mediate profound immune evasion of tumor cells. In antigenic murine melanomas, three immunosuppressive niches were identified. The tumor rim exhibits high numbers of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes that fail to effectively eradicate tumor cells, while the invasion zone displays robust anti-tumor effector responses.
