Aegina citrea Eschscholtz, 1829

Aegina citrea: Eschscholtz 1829: 113, 115; Kramp 1961: 266; 1968: 124, fig. 334.

Description: Six immature specimens from four stations. Bell-shaped umbrella, slightly broader than tall; up to 12 mm in diameter. Exumbrella smooth. Mesoglea thickened dorsally but thin laterally. Velum broad. Four equally well-developed peronia, four lappets. Four tentacles arising from within mesoglea, solid, characteristically banded. Without secondary tentacles on umbrella margin. Mouth simple, circular. Eight quadrangular gastric pouches, situated below level of tentacles. Peripheral canal present. Numerous statocysts, without otoporpae. When mature, gonads associated with gastric pouches.

Material examined: H4980.

Comments: This is the only species in this genus.

Distribution: World-wide in temperate and warm waters. Previously recorded off Madagascar (Vanhöffen 1912) and the Chagos Archipelago (Browne 1916). Eurybathic.
