«MULTI-FOIL» NEUTRON DETECTOR BASED ON 10V THIN-LAYER COATINGS
Description
The paper provides a justification for increasing the efficiency of a thermal neutron detector based on a 10В4C thin-layer coating by tilting the coating at a grazing angle to the incident neutron flux. The use of narrow-gap gas chambers in the detector with an anode-cathode distance of less than 2 mm makes it possible to obtain a spatial resolution of 0.2x2.5 sm2, a temporal resolution of up to 5 ns at a count rate of up to 107 s-1 mm-2. However, such chambers are extremely demanding on the flatness of the cathode. An original design of a detector with a grazing angle of incidence of a neutron beam of 2⁰, called “Multi-foil”, using a substrate made of a stretched metal foil or a radiation-resistant polymer film, based on the design of a narrow-gap chamber developed by B.Zh. Zalikhanov for the registration of charged particles. The detector efficiency was calculated using the Monte Carlo method in the Geant4 software package, which ranges from 50 to 94% in the wavelength range from 1 to 12 Å.
