An unsurprising emergence of discrete logarithmic sensing technologies

This note traces a thread of logarithmic transformation woven through a bricolage of interests in scientometrics, bioinformatics, radio telephony, and mathematics, to reveal a quasi-logarithmic function enlisted in construction of graphical displays, and to expose an oblique exponential function hidden within the inverse hyperbolic sine. Five applications, in bioinformatics and scientometrics, illustrate utility of discrete logarithmic sensors constructed from quasi-logarithmic and oblique exponential functions. Evolutions in design of such sensors forecast an unsurprising emergence of discrete logarithmic sensing technologies in data-driven disciplines beyond bioinformatics and scientometrics.
