Deriving homogeneous subsets from gene sets by exploiting the Gene Ontology

Description

The Gene Ontology consists of three directed acyclic graphs (DAGS) representing bio-
logical aspects. The DAGS of the Gene Ontology contain biological knowledge within a controlled
vocabulary of Gene Ontology terms. Based on functionality, genes are annotated to specific Gene
Ontology terms implying a semantic relationship. We propose an information-retrievel derived dis-
similarity between genes by using their annotations and investigate four gene sets with causal asso-
ciations using our proposed methodology showing homogenous and semantically related subset of
genes contrary to comparable works. In addition, most related works typically analyse gene expres-
sions to find gene subsets.
