Description
This repository contains data relating to the manuscript “Brain activity of diving seals reveals short sleep cycles at depth” (science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adf0566). Electrophysiological data (electroencephalogram [EEG], electrooculogram [EOG], electromyogram [EMG] and electrocardiogram [ECG]) and 3D motion data were collected from 13 juvenile female northern elephant seals, Mirounga angustirostris, at Long Marine Lab, Año Nuevo State Park, and in the Monterey canyon, California, USA. Time-depth and tracking data for sleep estimate analyses were collected from >300 adult female elephant seals between 2004 and 2019. Related data for this paper can be found in the Dryad repository. All animal procedures were approved at the federal and institutional levels under National Marine Fisheries Permits 496, 836, 786–1463, 87-1743, 19108, 14636, and 23188, and by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) of University of California Santa Cruz.
