THE CONTRIBUTION OF GEOGRAPHY TO CITIZEN EDUCATION: A TERRITORIAL ANALYSIS
Description
Considering its spatial dimension, citizenship has become a discussion for Geography, as Geographic Education contributes to the citizen discussion, as it enables the subject to have a critical reading of the world based on a territorial approach, allowing subjects to understand each other as citizens, endowed with rights and duties guaranteed by the Federal Constitution of 1988. The modern concept of citizenship, which emerged in England, established civil, political and social rights as the basis for an ideal of citizenship to be pursued. Since then, the concept has been widely discussed and (re)visited. In Brazil, in the post-redemocratization period, the discussion about the concept of citizenship became evident in the guiding documents of Brazilian education, consolidating a movement that aims to emphasize the role of education in citizenship formation, for which the importance of Geography is considered.
