COMPETITIVENESS OF THE GAÚCHO ORIZRICULTURAL SECTOR (2010-2022)

This study has evaluated the insertion of the rice sector produced in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) for the international trade. We applied the Revealed Comparative Advantage (IVCR), Symmetrical Revealed Comparative Advantage (IVCRS), and Regional Orientation (IOR) indices. The data cover the period between 2010 and 2022, covering an economic cycle of growth and retraction of Brazilian foreign trade, including the pandemic period. Results pointed to three main conclusions: i) Rio Grande do Sul has a large comparative advantage in rice exports in relation to the rest of the Brazilian states; ii) in relation to its main importing markets, the state has an advantage over India, a major world producer of the grain; iii) in recent years there has been a reorientation of Rio Grande do Sul exports to the United States, Canada and the Netherlands.
