Fig. 1. Diagrammatic representation of overlapping limits parapatry on a gradual (left) and steep (right) environmental gradient. Species A extends up-gradient to its environmental limit at X, while species B extends down-gradient to Y. The width of the overlap zone varies with the steepness of the gradient.
