Prison Architecture Assessment Tool

Authors/Creators

Description

This survey results from the findings of a systematic literature review by Engstrom and Van Ginneken (2022) examining the environmental domains in prison environments that previous literature has linked to experienced wellbeing. Part I: The Experience of Place survey is to be completed by incarcerated respondents and staff. There are two versions of the same survey, one written for staff and one for incarcerated individuals, each with 44 questions. Part II: The Assessment of Place, is a survey to be completed by an on-site researcher. This survey contains five domains to collect objective data, like the year a prison building was constructed and the overall prison layout. The Prison Architecture Assessment Tool (PAAT) can be administered independently to evaluate the impact of a prison's physical environment on the experienced wellbeing of staff and incarcerated individuals, and it can supplement a prison climate assessment tool, as these instruments do not currently integrate clear environmental dimensions.
