63 or 50k scale Maps of South Asia

A set of over 17,800 historical maps of South Asia produced by the Survey of India or its descendant organizations the Survey of Pakistan, the Survey of Bangladesh or the Survey of Burma, at scales of one inch per mile (1:63,360) or the more modern metric scale of 1:50,000.  These maps cover the territory of present day India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Burma. 

The template for producing these maps was changed in 1905.  Prior to 1905 the maps were made 30' wide and 15' high, often with sequential numbering.  After 1905 the maps were typically 15' high and 15' wide, and used the Survey's own Number - Letter - Number indexing system to designate the area covered.  It requires a total of 128 of the old-style "double-wide" 63k scale maps to fill a 4 degree by 4 degree quad area, and 256 individual new-style 63k maps to cover the same 4 degree by 4 degree quad area under the later, post-1905 system.

The file naming convention post-1905 is to give first the number of the 4 degree x 4 degree block (called a 'Quad') followed by the letter (A to P) of the sixteen 1 degree x 1 degree blocks in each 4 degree Quad eg. 38 D, and this is followed by a "]" symbol to indicate a slash and then a number from 01 to 16 to indicate the number of the map in the 1 degree block.  This Number Letter Number designation is followed by the name of one of the administrative districts encompassed by the map, followed by the date of publication in parenthesis.  If a map is reprinted without changes sometime after its initial publication, it is the date of initial publication (date of the actual data in the map) that is used.  The old, pre-1905 type maps were usually numbered sequentially for each provincial or topographic survey area.  We have chosen to begin the filenames for these older maps using the same number - letter -number system as the later maps, so that maps of the same area from either series will appear side-by-side in our map lists.  The designation under the old system is provided after the date.  The final item in some of the file names is a 3 letter abreviation of the name of the library or instituion which has provided the digital map image e.g. OxU for Oxford University.

Two Index Maps are provided to assist the viewer in selecting a map of interest.  An index map with the title "-Topographical Index of Survey of India.jpg" shows the sheet numbering system used by the Survey.  A second set of index maps with the title "Index of 63 or 50 k scale maps of Survey of India" shows greater detail with a complete page for each Quad.  The collection includes maps ranging from Quad 30 to Quad 102.

These map scans are collected from many sources, and the quality of the scans as well as the underlying paper maps is uneven.  Some scans are professionally done, while others are of poor quality.  On the assumption that 'some map is better than no map,' we include the poor quality scans until a better copy can be obtained.
