Description
As of January 2026, the ‘Old Survey of India Maps’ community is revising its system for presenting topographic maps. Due to the large number of maps in these categories, and the frequent availability of new maps, it has become difficult to maintain the previous system of presenting individual maps for download. In the new system, topo maps will be grouped together in categories and download will be by compressed .zip files comprising hundreds or thousands of maps in a single file. For each .zip file, a list of the included individual map file names will be presented, to assist the viewer in obtaining particular maps of interest.
This record presents a set of several hundred historical 1:63,360 scale (or the more modern 1:50,000 scale) topo maps of Quad 38 produced by the Survey of India or one of its several descendant organizations. Other records in this topographic series cover additional areas, ranging from Quad 30 to 102, as well as other scales such as 1:126,720 and 1:253,440. These maps include the territory of present-day India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Burma as well as some areas further west. The Survey of India began producing these 63k scale maps from the mid-19th century until around 1970, when the metric scale came into use. Prior to 1905 the maps were usually made 15’ high by 30’ wide (double-wide), after which they were usually 15’ high by 15’ wide.
There are a total of sixteen 1 degree x 1 degree blocks in each Quad, and sixteen 15 minute x 15 minute maps in a one degree block. Thus there are a total of 256 individual 63k scale maps to cover a complete 4 degree by 4 degree “Quad.” The file naming convention is to give first the number of the 4o x 4o degree quad followed by a letter (A to P) of the sixteen 1o x 1o blocks in each Quad (eg. 38 D), and this is followed by a "]" symbol to indicate a slash and then a number from 01 to 16 to indicate the number of a 15’ x 15’ map in the 1o block. This Number Letter ] Number designation is followed by the name of one of the administrative districts included in the map, and then the (date of publication) in parenthesis. If a map is reprinted without changes sometime after its initial publication, it is the date of initial publication or date of the most recent data change that is used. Sometimes a comment, letter or number is added at the end of the file name to ensure each file name is unique, or to provide additional information.
These map scans are collected from many sources and the quality of the scans as well as the underlying paper map sheets is uneven. Some scans are professionally done, while others are of poor quality. On the assumption that 'some map is better than no map,' we include the poor- quality scans until a better copy can be obtained.

The -Topographical Index of Survey of India.jpg file will produce an Asia-wide index map showing the location of each of the 4 degree x 4 degree "Quads" using the Survey of India's own indexing system.
