Can money and schooling save you from COVID-19? A study on socio-economic factors that contribute to COVID-19 deaths in the United States in 2021

  • 1. Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki

Description

COVID-19 pandemic has brought great loss to humanity. One of the biggest countries that play a central role in fighting the virus is the United States, a leading country in terms of economy and education. The study uses the data of deaths, personal income, education attainment, and population density at a state level. The variables are paired with the number of deaths in each state to calculate the correlation P-value. The study found that high income and low education attainment in a high school or higher level significantly correlate with deaths (p < 0.041 and < 0.0001 respectively). However, the education attainment in a bachelor degree or higher, as well as the population density, do not show any significant correlation with the death tolls (p = 0.43 and 0.08 respectively).
