Description

Sorex ugyunak Anderson and Rand, 1945. Canadian Field Nat., 59:62.

TYPE LOCALITY: "Tuktuk (Tuktuyaktok), norhteast side of Mackenzie River delta, south of Toker Point, Mackenzie District, Northwest Territories, Canada."

DISTRIBUTION: Mainland tundra west of Hudson Bay (Canada), and N Alaska (USA).

COMMENTS: Subgenus Otisorex. Formerly included in cinereus, but van Zyll de Jong (1976, 1991 b) provided arguments for a specific destinction of ugyunak; the taxon appears related to jacksoni and portenkoi. See Junge and Hoffmann (1981) and van Zyll de Jong (1983a) for further information.
