Description
Pipistrellus Kaup, 1829. Skizz. Entwickel.-Gesch. Nat. Syst. Europ. Thierwelt, 1:98.
TYPE SPECIES: Vespertilio pipistrellus Schreber, 1774.
SYNONYMS: Arielulus, Falsistrellus, Hypsugo, Perimyotis, Scotozous, Vansonia.
COMMENTS: For synonyms see Ellerman and Morrison-Scott (1951: 162-163); but also see Hill (1976:25); Kitchener et al. (1986); and Menu (1984). Hypsugo was considered a full genus by Tiunov (1986). Hill and Harrison (1987) would transfer Neomicia and Vespadelus to here from Eptesicus. Otherwise the subgenera they use are followed here.
