TYPE LOCALITY: Peru, Junin Dept., Vitoc, Garita del Sol.
DISTRIBUTION: E slopes of the Andes of Peru.
SYNONYMS: variabilis Tschudi, 1844.
COMMENTS: Subgenus Hadrosciurus; see Cabrera (1961:378). J. A. Allen (19156) placed pyrrhinus in the genus Mesosciurus.
