TYPE LOCALITY: Japan, Ryukyu Isis., Iriomote Isl., Haimida.
DISTRIBUTION: Iriomote Isl. (Ryukyu Isis.)
COMMENT: Possibly conspecific with bengalensis; Imaizumi's key characters are polymorphic in bengalensis (Glass, 1979, 59th Ann. Meet. Am. Soc. Mammal., p. 5); see Petzsch, 1970, Das Pelzgewerbe, 20:3-7; Guggisberg, 1975, The Wild Cats of the World, p. 89; Glass and Todd, 1977, Z. Saugetierk., 42:36-44.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix II as Felidae and U.S. ESA - Endangered as F. (= Mayailurus) irionwtensis.
