Description

Ovis Linnaeus, 1758. Syst. Nat., 10th ed., 1:70.

REVIEWED BY: R. S. Hoffmann (RSH); J. Ramirez-Pulido (JRP).

COMMENT: Placed in Capra by Van Gelder, 1977, Am. Mus. Novit., 2635:1-25; see comments under Capra. There is no consensus concerning the number of species to be recognized in this genus; some would recognize only one (ammon; see Haltenorth, 1963:126- 128); others two (ammon, canadensis; see Corbet, 1978:218), while others recognize up to seven, as do the most recent reviews (Nadler et al., 1973, Z. Saugetierk., 30:109- 125; Korobitsyna et al., 1974, Quat. Res., 4:235-245).

ISIS NUMBER: 5301419009041000000.
