Description
Castor fiber Linnaeus, 1758. Syst. Nat., 10th ed., 1:58.

TYPE LOCALITY: Sweden.
DISTRIBUTION: N.W. and N.C. Eurasia, east to Lake Baikal, and south to France and Mongolia.
COMMENT: Lavrov and Orlov, 1973, Zool. Zh., 52:734-742, clarified the distinction between this species and canadensis. Lavrov, 1979, Zool. Zh., 58(l):88-96, considered albicus a distinct species, but also see Corbet and Hill, 1980:142. OLR includes albicus in fiber.
PROTECTED STATUS: U.S. ESA - Endangered as C. f. birulai subspecies only.
