Description

Palingenia puella F.-J. Pictet, 1843

Palingenia puella F.-J. Pictet, 1843 -1845: 145, pl. 11, fig. 4.

Campsurus puella. – Eaton, 1871: 58 (transfer).

Polymitarcys albus Say, 1824. – Eaton, 1883: 47 (erroneous synonymization).

Tortopus puella. – McCafferty, 1996: 3 (transfer).

Tortopsis puella. – Molineri, 2010: 27 (transfer).

Accepted name: Tortopsis puella (F.-J. Pictet, 1843).

Locus typicus: “Cette espèce provient de la Nouvelle Orléans…” [Louisiana, USA].

Type material: Holotype [by monotypy], female imago. Not in MHNG, not traced.

Remarks: F.-J. Pictet mentioned that he had seen an incomplete female coming from the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) in Paris. Attempts made by Jean Legrand, former curator of small insect orders at the MNHN, and by the first author to locate the specimen failed. It is presumably lost.
