THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COGNITIVE STYLE FIELD-INDEPENDENCE-FIELDDEPENDENCE WITH SOCIAL NETWORK EXPERIENCE ON INSTAGRAM

Description

Background: The study is based on the theoretical framework of Cognitive style Field-Independence and Field-Dependence, where first one implies greater autonomy and impersonal orientation, while the latter one less autonomy and interpersonal orientation. In this paper field-independence-field-dependence is considered as a broad behavioral style determining performance of an individual within the Social Network Instagram experience, where mass standards and biases of beauty, success as well as feedback pressure can influence a user's well-being with equivocal circumstances. Aim: To explore whether cognitive style Field-Independendence-Field-Dependence correlates with positive and negative Instagram experience among young adults in Kazakhstan. Design: Quantitative non-experimental research design. Sample: Non-probability convenience sampling technique. 44 young adults between 18 to 24 years of age, where 4 males and 40 females participated in the study.

Measures: Embedded Figure Test with 30 items to measure cognitive style field-independence-field-dependence and self-administered survey with 27 items (7 general) to observe Social Network Instagram experience. Statistical analysis: Chi-square test with critical values of 5,1 (df2), 7,8 (df3), 9,5 (df4) and p-value of 0,05. Results: 7 items of a survey illustrated a significant relationship between cognitive style field-independencefield-dependence and Social Network Instagram experience, while 13 components did not support the relationship. Limitations: Small sample size with low representativeness; one statistical tool to make statistical analysis. Conclusion: The results are provisional in an attempt to demonstrate the holistic nature of human functioning including both cognition and personality and its role on Social Media Instagram.
